There are two things that, without fail, you’ll encounter every November: Christmas promotions that start way too early (wait until Thanksgiving, people!) and clean-shaven men attempting to grow mustaches. “Movember,” as it’s called, isn’t just an excuse for guys to finally prove to their significant others that they look good with a mustache; it’s actually a world-renowned charity that uses facial hair as a catalyst to spread awareness for men’s health.
“With their ‘Mo’s,’ men raise vital funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer and mental health,” said Shannyn Merlo, project manager at Movember. “As an independent global charity, Movember’s vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health.”
The organization has been a Formstack customer since Movember of 2011. In light of this month and the members of the Formstack team who are growing mustaches for good, we’re spotlighting this charity and the ways it uses Formstack in November and beyond.
At the beginning of November, men can sign up to participate in Movember’s month-long initiative. Essentially, the supporters in their life can “sponsor” their mustache-growing efforts.
“Guys register with a clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery,” said Merlo. “Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.”
But Movember’s vision doesn’t end on December 1. Using the money raised during Movember, the organization funds programs that address prostate and testicular cancer research and awareness, as well as efforts to help men who are living with or beyond cancer.
The Tech Problem:
Prior to finding Formstack, Merlo was looking for a more robust solution to build surveys. “When I first went to set up a very complex survey, I found the software that we had been using previously to be very limited,” said Merlo. “It simply could not support the tasks that I needed to complete.”
Additionally, the organization needed a form builder that featured a File Upload field to facilitate the collection of important and relevant information. However, most solutions Merlo found were either more expensive than Formstack or simply didn’t offer the feature.
After researching cost-effective, yet robust, form solutions, Merlo came across Formstack. Now, the organization uses Formstack for a variety of needs, from surveys to initial collection of data for funding potential researchers and projects.
“I think that the ability for users to save the form is a very helpful feature, but by far the most used feature we use is the File Upload field,” said Merlo. “As a charity, we have to ensure we are mindful of how funds raised by our hard working Mo Bros and Mo Sistas is used.”
After this year’s mustaches are shaved, the organization will continue to use Formstack to accomplish the data collection needs it encounters throughout the year. As far as Merlo’s advice to other users or charities looking for a form solution? “Think through how you want the forms to perform,” said Merlo. “The solution has allowed me to undertake all the tasks that I needed to.”
