Do you think fun and work are like oil and water? Formstack thinks they go together just fine.

In order to find the right mix between work and fun you have to accept that fun at work is not only possible, but should be encouraged. Wasn’t school more fun when the teacher made learning a game?
I have to admit for a long time I thought that work wasn’t fun, and wasn’t supposed to be. I am happy to announce that I have found a group of individuals who don’t mind laughter and fun at work. Finding the right balance is the key. What we have found at Formstack is that most of us welcome a few short breaks in the day to keep us motivated and alert.
If any individual is sitting in front of their computer for 8 hours a day straight, they eventually will get burned out or bored. Taking a short break to play ping pong isn’t irresponsible or a waste of time.
Playing ping pong together may seem silly, but it is a great way to bond with co-workers and to break the ice with new employees. At Formstack, we also try to do out-of-office, fun activities about once a month. We may go play laser tag, or tailgate at a football game, but it is always a fun experience that helps build camaraderie. You do spend at least 40 hours a week together. Those hours can either be filled with silence and the occasional short exchange about the weather, or they can be filled with laughter and a few ping pong games a week.
Here is a short list of ways to mix fun into work:
- Find an office game, ours is ping pong, maybe yours could be a board game? A trivia game? Doesn’t matter as long as it can get you away from your desk for a bit every once and a while.
- Eat lunch together. We eat as a team every Friday, but we only have 13 employees. If you work in a larger office, just try to plan lunch with a few co-workers once a week, and try to not to chat about work.
- Celebrate birthdays and holidays. We celebrated Halloween with a pitch-in and Halloween Movie Charades.
- During a weekly meeting on Friday we have one co-worker tell a joke, they get to pick where we go to lunch that day.
You just have to find the right balance for your work environment. It may take some getting used to, but enjoying your time at work is possible.
