Making the Most of an Internship: A Letter to Intern Seekers

Hello Formstack blog readers, and welcome to my Formstacker Friday blog post! I’m Lance, and I’m the marketing intern here at Formstack. As I understand, Formstacker Friday is intended to show how each of the employees here at Formstack represent the company in his or her own way. Since I represent the company from the viewpoint of an intern, what better topic to start with than advice for interns out there searching the blogosphere.

I won’t spend much time on the process of obtaining an internship. If you’re already searching, I’ll assume you have a good idea what you are doing. I will mainly focus on making your internship the best it can be. But here are a few basic tips to keep in mind:

1. Learn what you can about the company before interviewing.

2. Dress the part.

3. Bring copies of everything.

I started at Formstack back in June. This is the first internship I have ever had, so I was a little nervous starting out. I quickly learned that the culture here at Formstack is quite open and energetic. It didn’t take long for me to make friends with everyone. For all you intern seekers out there, there is no better piece of advice I can give than to jump in and just be a regular part of the team. If you think of yourself as an intern, that is how everyone else will see you. But if you think of yourself as just another important part of the team, you’ll be treated as one.

If you are a part-time intern, don’t be afraid to take part in team activities and stay in touch with your company on your days away from work. It is as important to mesh with your coworkers and company culture as it is to have all the right job qualifications.

Intern seekers, don’t ever be afraid to ask questions and seek help. You are not expected to know everything. Asking questions is the best way to learn and can also provide a great team building opportunity. Even after your question is answered, if you can, dig deeper and show your interest in learning more.

These tips have helped me while here at Formstack, and I know they will help you in your new internship as well. Thanks and Happy Friday!
